Meet the San Marcos Team Behind Mainspring Garage Door Co.
We’re the crew that shows up when your garage door won’t budge at 6 a.m. or when you’re staring at a spring that looks like a slinky gone wrong. Every one of us lives here in the San Marcos area, and we treat your door like it’s on our own house. That means no shortcuts, no mystery charges, and no leaving until it’s done right.
Our People
Carl Dutton, Owner
I started Mainspring in 1984, back when San Marcos was a fraction of the size it is now. I’ve personally installed doors in neighborhoods that didn’t have paved roads yet, and I’ve seen what happens when someone tightens a torsion spring “until it feels about right” - usually a call to me a week later. These days I run the business, train our journeymen, and still climb a ladder when a job needs an extra set of hands. I named the company for the mainspring, the coil that carries every pound of your door’s weight. It’s the part nobody sees until it fails. That seemed like the right metaphor for how we work.
Mike R., Lead Technician
Mike’s been with us twelve years, and he’s the guy we send when a door has stumped everyone else. He’s factory-certified on LiftMaster, Genie, and Chamberlain openers, but his real specialty is diagnosing what other techs miss - the subtle cable wear or the track misalignment that causes a door to drift six months after a “repair.” Mike lives in Kyle and spends weekends fishing the Blanco River. He’ll tell you the only thing worse than a broken garage door is a broken garage door that was “fixed” by someone having a very optimistic day.
Dolores V., Senior Installer
Dolores handles our new door and replacement installations across San Marcos, New Braunfels, and up into the Hill Country. She’s installed everything from basic steel doors in starter homes to custom Carriage House models in Seguin ranch properties, and she’s particularly sharp on Clopay and Amarr product lines. Before joining us eight years ago, she spent six years in commercial construction, which means she reads a framing situation fast and knows when a header needs reinforcement before the door goes in. Dolores keeps a notebook of every job she’s done - not for us, for herself. She likes knowing exactly what she left behind.
James T., Service Coordinator
James is the live voice answering when you call (737) 361-1958 at 11 p.m. on a Sunday. He’s been with Mainspring four years, and he knows which technician is where, which trucks carry which springs, and whether your particular Wayne Dalton model needs a proprietary part or has a generic equivalent. James grew up in Wimberley and still lives there with his family. He schedules, he troubleshoots over the phone when he can, and he’s the one who makes sure you’re not sitting around wondering if anyone’s coming. He hates voicemail as much as you do.
Elena M., Apprentice Technician
Elena joined us last year after completing her technical training at Texas State and deciding she wanted work that didn’t keep her behind a desk. She’s working through our K.E.Y.S. journeyman program - Krafted right, Every time, Your home first, Standing behind it - and she’s already handling cable replacements, roller swaps, and safety sensor alignments on her own. Mike R. oversees her torsion spring work, which is serious business and not something we rush. Elena lives in San Marcos proper, near the university, and she’s been quick to learn which neighborhoods have the older Raynor doors that need specific hardware. She asks more questions than anyone on the crew, which is exactly what we want.
One Standard, Every Job
Every person on this page, from the owner to the apprentice, works under the same written promise: the 90-Day Done Right Promise. If something we installed or repaired isn’t right, we come back and make it right. No paperwork to file, no argument about whether it qualifies, no charge for the return trip. That promise travels with us from San Marcos to every community we serve in Central Texas.
Our trucks leave the shop stocked with springs, cables, openers, and hardware for all major brands - LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie, Clopay, Amarr, Wayne Dalton, Craftsman, Raynor - because a second trip means you’re waiting and we’re not earning your trust. Before any work starts, we tell you the flat price. You’ll know exactly what the bill says before we pick up a tool. No surprises, no upsell, no “while we’re here” pressure.
The phone rings through to a live person, every hour of every day. Nights, weekends, holidays. No phone trees, no answering service reading from a script. That’s James or one of our trained coordinators, and they’ll tell you honestly whether you’re looking at an emergency call or something that can wait until morning without risk.
We’re background-checked, uniformed, and trained to work in your home the way we’d want someone working in ours. That’s not a slogan. It’s how we’ve operated since 1984, and it’s how we’ll keep operating as long as San Marcos homeowners need a garage door that opens when it should and closes when it should.
